This week's round-up!
It's been a sad and scary week politically with little news that is not about conflict so this round up will be a little short. Google is still fighting with European powers over 'right to be forgotten'. This time Europe is insisting that links removed from the local version of Google are also removed from the American versions, a request Google is expected to refuse. Strong performance in China has salvaged Apple's otherwise poor quarterly earnings as speculation grows over a new i-Phone.
Following on the theme from last week when I linked to the FT.com's series on water, this article considers what shale gas and fracking means for American energy consumption and independence. Th is is nice article from Forbes about bouncing back from early failure to go on and succeed as an entrepreneur and keeping failure in perspective. Finally a review of the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It's hot, we might as well watch the sport.

Graduation and Weekly roundup
It's be lovely this week to see so many happy students graduating and
celebrating with their families. Congratulations to you all and good
luck with the future.
First a technology update. This article looks at how much money Google makes from adverts and how this influences their search algorithms. It also looks at how they are adapting to mobile and tablet searching. Remember if you want searches uninfluenced by marketing, you can always use Summon or search our library databases directly. Another FT.com article looks at a new collaboration between IBM and Apple to make tablets more business friendly and focused. This article on Lego's success is interesting, focusing on the increasing amount of time Children spend engaging in 'digital play'. More serious is the first in a series of articles focusing on water shortage in the world and how the will affect business and the world in general. A serious, fascinating and alarming read.
Finally as helpful little blog on using tweetdeck for research and advanced news gathering.

Weekly Round-up
I hope you are all enjoying the lovely summer weather. I have been doing lots of inductions for the Summer schools this week and it is exciting to welcome so many new students and to see those of you who are giving up your summer to learn something else new.
I really like this article from the Guardian, discussing how important is is, not just for Governments to impose an ethical framework or for companies to put up a CSR statement but for those values to be truly embedded in the company thinking and culture. One the topic of ethical behaviour here are two articles from the FT about Facebook's psychological experiments on its users. A UK data regulator is probing Facebook over whether this is acceptable behaviour from the social media network. How do you feel that Facebook might have manipulated you? Well Facebook has promised not to do it again, if you believe them...
On the subject of ethical behaviour, if you end up in charge of big company be careful who you choose to represent you. You never know when they might bite someone as Luis Suarez' sponsors have found out to their cost. Finally a bit for inspiration from the Guardian - this is a list of their top 10 sustainability innovations and it's really fascinating. Maybe you will discover the next or innovatively use these ones.

Smartphones, Patents & E-Cigarettes
Amazon have launched their own Smartphone handset called 'Fire' to compete more directly with Apple and Samsung. They base a lot of their appeal around their wide range of digital content and special apps to make it easier for users to buy books. While Amazon eyes a smartphone, Apple's 'Smartwatch' comes closer and closer to production despite some commentators' doubts about the wisdom of making such a niche product. In less competitive news, Tesla has decided to share all its technology in a bid to make collaborations and push forward the development of electric cars. Hopefully the successful expansion and development of electric car tech would reduce air pollution and oil dependence. Finally competition between the big tobacco firms over e-cigarettes is becoming more fierce. Big Tobacco is seeking to capitalise on e-cig sales even as governments begin to discuss moves to restrict advertising of the controversial devices.
Quite a short blog this week. Must have been a slow news week Hope you are enjoying the summer and not too stressed with deadlines

Weekly Round-up
Let's kick off this round up with something fun - the FT's writeup of the first game of the World Cup in Brazil. Are you all enjoying the football? Once you;ve read about the game you might also like to look into the impact of big sporting events on business and national economies. You can find some articles on Summon and they are quite fascinating. Followup articles looking at Apple's intention to make the iPhone a health hub where users can consolidate data from all their different apps and health measurement devices and the fascinating announcement that Apple has decided to open up bits of iOS to developers, making it easier for external developers to create and develop apps and techs for the iPhone. In a bit of cool news, Bloomberg are trialling their database on the Oculus virtual reality headsets, wouldn't that be more fun than using the Financial Markets Lab? Bloomberg is such a useful resource for anything from company and country research to understanding whole sectors and economies.
Finally some more (yet more?) articles looking at jobhunting, ettiquette and the work place. First up, one from the FT.com discussing how to prepare your online presence for the job hunt. It's not just a case of getting and maintaining a positive LinkedIn presence - a website used by many recruiters - but also making sure your private life is private. So be careful with those privacy setting on Instagram and Facebook, employers don't like to google potential employees and see photos of the their last drunken night out! The next article is a list of resources to help you prepare for job interviews, including dealing with unexpected questions! Definitely good to have a look so you are nice and prepared. Finally some tips on office etiquette, make sure you stay polite, answer emails politely and respect your colleagues. Presentation is so important and it can be a shock to adjust to after the informality of university.
