MGT3201 Sony (UK) LTD. Why did Sony come to Britain?

The reasons motivating Sony's entry to the UK market are discussed in the title Working for the Japanese: Myths and realities, by Stephanie Jones (1991). See chapter 4: Japanese companies come to Britain, pages 54 - 57. Copies are available in the library at shelf location 338.88952041 JON

Tips for MGT3201 Students

From our first set of group support sessions, it seems that some of you are struggling to find historical information about the year of entry and market conditions in the host country in the year of entry so we have some helpful suggestions about places you can look.

The first place to start is sony.net which has key information about its development and expansion

Sony history:
This link includes a timeline of when Sony entered different countries and access to bits of the Sony Time Capsule and Archive all of which may be helpful.

Sony also keeps historical statistical and financial information on its website.
This link should help you with that.

If using country reports has not given you enough information about the market in the host country at the time of entry, you can try looking for information from the OECD, the World Bank and the IMF.

Don't forget to use Summon and search for journals too. Looking forward to seeing the the remaining groups and please do email the librarians if you need any more help with research.

Meeting new students!

Last week, I said welcome to the new January entrants in this blog but this week I actually met some of you at inductions which was lovely. I hope you are all settling into Middlesex and looking forward to the term ahead.  I know I will be seeing lots of you again soon for Library Essential Skills sessions so if you are struggling to find resources or renew your books, don't worry! Help will soon be at hand.

For those Business students who are planning to set up their own business (or perhaps already have!), this article on the success of the Cambridge Satchel Company is fascinating. They have gone from making satchels in a very small scale way and do the paper work in the kitchen over a cup of tea to attracting $21 million dollars of investment for expansion and their bags being carried by celebrities!

For students who are looking at emerging markets, Unilever reports growth after struggling in September. Don't forget to sign up to the FT.com to read that link and take advantage of the subscription purchased for Middlesex students. Details of how to sign up can be found here - on the Business & Management Library subject guide. MBA students might be interested in this Financial Times article looking at the widening gap in energy prices between Europe and the rest of the world. MGT3201 students who are currently studying Sony might be interested to compare Sony's current situation with Nintendo which, according to this article, is struggling.

Lots of papers has picked up this rather scary report from Oxfam that the 85 richest people own as much as the 3.5 Billion poorest. A rather sobering statistic for the end of the week and one with chilling implications for social mobility.

Welcome to the new Business & Management Blog!

Welcome back to those students returning from the winter break and a warm welcome to the new January entrants.

This library blog is designed to highlight interesting news and events relevant to students in the business school and also to draw attention to the support the librarians offer.

This week we have been busy running sessions on referencing, literature searching and finding reports for various different modules. I hope those of you who attended found them helpful. For those of you who were unable to attend or who want a reminder, presentations and worksheets can be found on the Business & Management library subject guide. Alternatively don't hesitate to email us and ask for help.

This week I also spotted this nice article on revising from the Guardian education section which might be helpful. Exams are always a cause of stress and it's good to be well prepared.

There also an interesting article on a fitness band being premiered by Sony at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas earlier this month. Is technology that monitors all our food and activies the future or it is too invasive? This article might be of particular interest to students current doing project work on Sony for MGT3201.
