Meeting new students!

Last week, I said welcome to the new January entrants in this blog but this week I actually met some of you at inductions which was lovely. I hope you are all settling into Middlesex and looking forward to the term ahead.  I know I will be seeing lots of you again soon for Library Essential Skills sessions so if you are struggling to find resources or renew your books, don't worry! Help will soon be at hand.

For those Business students who are planning to set up their own business (or perhaps already have!), this article on the success of the Cambridge Satchel Company is fascinating. They have gone from making satchels in a very small scale way and do the paper work in the kitchen over a cup of tea to attracting $21 million dollars of investment for expansion and their bags being carried by celebrities!

For students who are looking at emerging markets, Unilever reports growth after struggling in September. Don't forget to sign up to the FT.com to read that link and take advantage of the subscription purchased for Middlesex students. Details of how to sign up can be found here - on the Business & Management Library subject guide. MBA students might be interested in this Financial Times article looking at the widening gap in energy prices between Europe and the rest of the world. MGT3201 students who are currently studying Sony might be interested to compare Sony's current situation with Nintendo which, according to this article, is struggling.

Lots of papers has picked up this rather scary report from Oxfam that the 85 richest people own as much as the 3.5 Billion poorest. A rather sobering statistic for the end of the week and one with chilling implications for social mobility.
